    CONGRATULATIONS to Peg Whitehead who was named "Retired Educator of the Year". Peg has spent numberous volunteer hours with a variety of organizations and causes. She was awarded $75 to be sent to the volunteer organization or charity of her choice.

    AUG.10th MEETING: Our guest speaker was Darrell Layfield, who gave quite an entertaining demonstration on uses of technology in today's classroom. He illustrated the awesome power of the smartboard. He left us with a list of websites with additional resources:

    Outstanding entertainment was provided by the Jazz Band from Sebring Middle School under the direction of Tom Frazer. These talented kids played with a decidedly mature sound -- more like a senior high rather than middle school.

    ABOUT HCRESPA:

    The Highlands County Retired Educators and Support Personnel Association located in Central Florida is a local unit of The Florida Association of Retired Educators (FREA) which is affiliated with National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA), a division of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

    Our local chapter meets the 2nd Thursday of the following months: October, December, February, and April from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Location varies) Each program includes a short business discussion, an informative program, entertainment, and lunch.

    We welcome all retired professional educators as well as active educators and other school support personnel.

    MISSION STATEMENT:

    The Highlands County Retired Educators / Support Personnel (H.C.R.E.S.P.A.) is organized to promote the general welfare of Retired Educators and Support Personnel.


    GOALS:

    1. Promote the psychological and economic well-being of its members.
    2. Maintain identity with the Education profession at both the state and local levels.
    3. Promote group and individual efforts in community affairs.
    4. Foster good fellowship among retirees.
    5. Assist the school system by financially supporting foundations and school programs.

    DUES:

    Annual membership dues are $10.00 for the Highlands County Retired Educators & Support Personnel Association and $30.00 for the Florida Assocation of Retired Educators.

    FUND RAISING:

    Our primary fund-raising effort is to generate funds for the Highlands County Education Foundation for teacher mini-grants and the Summit Awards Program (teacher and support personnel recognition.

    LEGISLATIVE MONITORING:

    Our local association supports FREA in its effort as a legislative advocate on retirement issues. The State Legislative Committee provides a channel for members to hear and be heard; it convenes in Tallahassee each March during legislative session to meet with legislators. Additionally, the Committee maintains a year-round presence in Tallahassee to monitor all activities relative to the Florida Retirement System, particularly management of the Trust Fund and operations of the Divison of Retirement.
