How to Become a Substitute

Thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute for the School Board of Highlands County. We are in need of dependable, well-prepared substitutes.

 

To become an active substitute, please follow the instructions below:


To become an active substitute teacher
please follow the instructions below.
  1. Complete the online application for employment.


  2. Provide verification of high school diploma, GED, college degree or transcripts. Testing requirements and rate of pay will be determined by the level of education completed and attached to the online application.


  3. Apply to the online substitute vacancy on Vacancies Desired page. Click the “Submit Application” button to apply successfully.


  4. Once the online application has been screened by HRRPD, substitute applicant will be notified, via email reflected on the online application submitted, of the next steps as applicable.
  1. Testing is administered at an off-site location. Initial testing fees are borne by the District; retake fees are the responsibility of the applicant. All testing requirements must be completed prior to vacancy closing date to be considered. Applicants who hold an associate’s degree or higher are exempt from testing requirements.


  2. All onboarding fees are the responsibility of the applicant. Fees include:
  3. • Fingerprinting / background screening

    • Drug screening

    • Online substitute training


  4. As per Florida Statute 1012.35, training must be completed by all substitutes. The required training for the School Board of Highlands County include:
  5. • Online 20-hour, 5-module coursework

    • On-site classroom observation

    • All training must be successfully completed prior to placement in job assignment(s)


  6. Substitutes who successfully complete the onboarding process will be approved for a three (3) year validity period.
